Never After #1

Hooked

Emily McIntire

4.38

He wants revenge, but he wants her more.

Once upon a time, there was a little boy.

His belly full of laughter, his life full of joy.

Until one day, something changed; stripped his innocence away.

The hole inside making space for the devil to come and play.

His dreams gone forever, he grew up way too fast.

An endless night of crocodiles, and watches made of glass.

He grew into a villain, the taste of vengeance on his tongue.

Craving to make his enemies pay for the misdeeds they had done.

Instead he found a darling girl, and refused to let her go.

For what better way to make the man pay, than to steal his little shadow.

Okay so.. I’m not sure what to even say about this book. It definitely was NOT what I thought it would be. I was expecting Sophie Lark romance. NOPE. I loved it anyway, though. I love Wendy. She deserves everything good. And like, I get her father was a horrible person, but the story about the acorns hurt me. Some of the things said towards Wendy pissed me off, but James/Hook redeemed himself. I’m so happy about Jon finally having an actual family. I loved him. Overall, I give this book 4/5 stars, but I probably won’t re-read it again. unless it’s for the smut. then it’ll be re-read 🫡

There were times when it was difficult to suspend disbelief. That Wendy, the daughter of an extremely wealthy man, would work at a coffee shop to the point where she bemoans working so much that she doesn't have time to spend with her brother. Her father doesn't begrudge her money, nor does she know at the time what his business really is. Also, it made no sense that her excuse for not going to College was that she didn't want to move away from her brother, yet they live in Boston, where there are many excellent Universities all within easy commuting distance, so she can live at home while going to classes. I've read a lot of mafia romances, so Hook being 2nd in command of a criminal organization, I figured he would follow along similar lines. But his and his boss's business dealings with Wendy's father made no sense. Who goes into business without knowing the other's reputation and not bringing any men to these meetings? Hook knows how dangerous Peter is, yet doesn't warn his boss or order men to go keep an eye out. Also, that Hook could have easily found out who the woman was that asked for payment by inquiring about her description, rather than assuming it was Wendy, was utterly baseless. He was an idiot, especially since he was thinking of killing without even looking into whether she was involved . All these things that didn't make much sense took me out of the story. I was also surprised that the smutty scenes were lackluster, given how much Hook oozed sex appeal.

James had been through a lot in his life, and it has taken its toll on his soul. He is not a good man and sees a way to get a little bit of revenge against a man who has wronged him. Enter Wendy Michaels. James pursues her, and she quickly falls for his charms. While James is using her to get his revenge, he feels betrayed when he thinks that Wendy had something to do with the death and destruction happening in his life. This was a very loosely based retelling of Peter Pan, and I really enjoyed all the little snippets and connections that were sprinkled in. I really enjoyed this story and the fact that James stayed the villain but was still about to show and prove his love!
