I absolutely loved this book. This was my favorite read so far this year. Niko was everything, and he was so perfect for Brandon. This was also my first MM romance, and it did not disappoint. I am so glad I stuck with this series since I was not a fan of the 1st two books. I did very much enjoy it from book 3 on, though. The struggles and the love these two experienced felt so visceral. The emotional connection to the characters was felt throughout their story. Both Nikolai and Brandon have their mental health issues and problems. Brandon keeps his hidden from everyone behind a carefully maintained facade. Throughout the story, you are left wondering what happened in Bran's past to make him feel broken, unlovable, and so much self loathing. It is heart breaking to see the pain Bran goes through. They were meant for each other; their broken pieces fit together perfectly. Niko bulldozed right through a lot of Bran's walls. I loved how clingy and obsessed he was. Bran had a soothing effect on Niko. Niko is a special kind of crazy and is almost always certain he can get Bran to love him and be almost as obsessed with him back. I loved Nikolai so much; he was so persistent, patient, protective, focused, caring, understanding, and obsessed with Bran. He doesn't take no for an answer but does give Bran space at times and goes along with not telling anyone at first. Niko had me laughing so much at his antics and a lot of the stuff he would say. His conversations with Kolya had me rolling. Niko also said some of the sweetest things to Bran that just made my heart melt. When Niko breaks up with Bran, it is so sad, since both are so miserable without the other, but I can't blame Niko; he was more than patient, and Bran was in denial, and his constant rejection was just too much. That Bran wouldn't even acknowledge their relationship and forbid Niko from telling anyone for so long was so sad. This led to one of Niko's dark spells. Bran also went through a very difficult period being apart from Niko. There were some great moments even outside their relationship, like how Brandon & Landon talked and repaired their relationship, and they both shared how much the other means to them. When they were fifteen, Bran shut Lan out of his life and kept him at arm's length, which hurt Lan more than he ever let on. It was touching to hear them talk about how this made them feel and talk about what they mean to each other. Also, Brandon visiting his parents and their talks together was so sweet you could see how much they truly loved him and wanted him to be happy. It was gratifying to see Niko & Lan take care of the cause of Brandon's problems together. I can't say enough about how beautiful Nikolai's & Brandon's story was. I cried a few times while reading. It was so heartfelt and emotional. I cannot recommend this book more. Not because I followed Brandon like a creepy stalker or anything equally stupid. Okay, maybe I did, but it was only for two blocks. Maybe three. Fine. Five. I’ve got to say, his case of denial runs pretty deep, and I’m not sure how to get him out of his own ass—something a lot more pleasurable needs to go there. But I digress. Seriously, Kolya. Thinking of fucking him won’t get you there faster. Let my brain solve this issue for once. Sooner or later, I’ll wear him down. I always do. No one can resist my undivided attention and constant pushing and shoving and annoying the fucking bejesus out of them. “Don’t run away from me again. If you do, I’ll flip the world upside down to find you. You’re mine now, baby.” No one has ever said that to me. No one has ever been so obsessed with me that they act like they’d move heaven and earth to protect me. I shouldn’t even want protection or this toxic connection. But the reality I’ve been trying to ignore crashes into me. I want him. I fucking crave him. So much it hurts. “Mine. Every inch of you is fucking mine.” He loves me. I just know he does. Okay, he doesn’t, but he cares, and that’s a good start. Why did you come into my life and destroy every wall I built and ruin every lie I told myself? Why do you touch me like I’m beautiful? Why don’t you hate me when I can’t stand my-fucking-self?” “I can’t hate you, baby. as he hangs on to me as if I’m his only anchor, I know that I’ll never let him go. Not even if I burn with him. For him. In him. I’d willingly catch fire if he so much as asked me to. I’m just proving a point. The fact that he belongs to me and only me. The fact that he still only wants me and will never fucking replace me. “You’re mine, Brandon. Fucking mine. If you think there’s another option out there for you other than me, I have a news flash for you.” I bite the shell of his ear and he moans, the sound muffled by my hand. “You fucking don’t. Just know that I’ll slaughter anyone you let near you and fuck you in their blood.” I hurt him enough by denying my sexuality and him. He was patient and even agreed to see me in secret although he’s openly bi. I can’t hurt him anymore, that would be worse than causing pain to myself. The idea of losing him scares the shit out of me, Dad.” He’s not afraid for him, he’s afraid of losing him. The delinquent gangster motherfucker. “All my life, I thought I was one of those people who was meant to be alone, but he changed that. Single-handedly. He chased me and made it impossible to ignore him. He’s helped me become a better man—more balanced, less…agitated and lonely. He’s the only one for me. So…if you don’t hate him a lot, can you try to accept him? I love you and respect you a lot, Dad. You know how much your approval means to me.” “Come here, son.” I half hug him. “I don’t actually hate him. I just don’t like the idea of him replacing me.” “Because this means I love the fucking shit out of you, baby. I can’t live without you and you’re not allowed to leave me.” “Even if you hate yourself, I’ll love you for the both of us.” “I’d kill for you, I’d shoot myself if that makes you breathe better without me shadowing you, but I’d never…ever hurt you, Bran.” “I never hated you, Lan. I hated myself, yes, but never you.” I release a mock laugh. “You were the half I looked at whenever I needed hope. Seeing you being your unapologetic, confident anarchist self made me believe I’d eventually be okay. You gave me strength, even unknowingly, so you shouldn’t apologize. This isn’t on you, it’s on me. You couldn’t have known when I didn’t let you in. And I didn’t let anyone in.” “I love you, little bro,” he whispers. “I need you to know that. I need you to know you’re the first person I loved unconditionally and always will. I might annoy you, might act like a dick to get your attention, but that’s only because the thought of losing you scares the living fuck out of me.” “How could you?” He strides toward me, his voice vibrating with fear instead of anger. “How could you try to leave me? Don’t you know I can’t live without you anymore?” “But you’re okay with me losing you? I’m a shell without you, Bran.” He drags my hand to him and slams it against his chest. “This thing only beats for you and because of you. I used to live an aimless life where adrenaline was my god, but you came along and tamed my demons. You balance me. You complete me. You’re fucking in me. “Not even if you beg for it. I love you, lotus flower, and that means I’ll be by your side during all of your battles with your demons. I’ll kill them for you if you let me. I’ll listen to them if you want me to. But I’ll never leave you, so you’re stuck with me.” You’re the purest, most passionate soul I’ve ever met. You loved me when I didn’t even like myself. You held me together when I was falling apart and helped me put myself back together one piece at a time until I became the man I am today.” He reaches into his jacket and pulls out a dark-blue velvet box, then opens it to show two rings. “I love you more than words can describe and I’ll be honored if you choose to spend the rest of your life with me so I can give back a fraction of what you’ve given me. Nikolai Sokolov, would you marry me—”
