Next of Kin

Hannah Bonam-Young

4.25

Two bickering strangers trying to foster their younger siblings team up to create a stable home, but the chemistry between them threatens to undo their plans—from the viral TikTok author of Next to You and Out on a Limb.

“Funny and huge-hearted and romantic and real.”—New York Times bestselling author Talia Hibbert

When people-pleasing Chloe learns that her birth mother has unexpectedly had another baby, she doesn’t hesitate to become a next-of-kin guardian. But when she fails to pass Child Protective Services’ financial evaluation, she is faced with a choice: see her baby sister placed in foster care or participate in CPS’s new initiative, where two prospective guardians join households to qualify.

Enter Warren, a surly mechanic’s apprentice attempting to get custody of his deaf fifteen-year-old brother. From the moment Warren drives up thirty minutes late, blasting music out of his car, Chloe is convinced that this is a very bad idea. The two immediately clash but eventually agree to live together for the sake of their younger siblings.

As their lives intertwine, and Chloe adjusts to caring for her newborn sister, she begins to see a new, softer side of Warren. In fact, they’re far more similar than she could have imagined. What started as forced begins to feel natural—and far less lonely. Chemistry soon intensifies beyond what either of them can stand, but is their mutual attraction worth risking everything they’ve fought for?

Okay y'all. I've had time to think over my review and I've just now had time to sit down and write it. I genuinely loved this. It's the first full fledged romance book I've read in months, and I'm so glad I did. There honestly wasn't anything I didn't love about this. Overall, I think I'll give it 4.5/5 stars! I can't wait to continue with her books.

I knew this was gonna be good but I didn't expect to cry nearly this much. I was adopted, so this hit pretty hard, but it really is so accurate to how these things happen. I love seeing these situations written so well and to feel like there's someone out there who gets it. I adore Chloe and Warren, how none of their initial annoyed banter had malicious intent and how it evolved into pure love.

“I’m peace to you?” I ask. He nods, pulling his lips into his mouth with a creased brow. “Well, you’re my home.” Hannah Bonam-Young is quickly becoming an instant read for me. One thing I just love about her books is how real they are. This book is about two young people moving in together in order to become foster parents for their younger siblings and this book had me in love with them from the first page. You just feel for these characters and what they have been through. I also cried at the end and that’s always major points in my book. What I’m finding in her books is that the relationships themselves are so sweet and all the angst and stuff comes from outside forces and real life things not things like miscommunication which is super refreshing to read. 🌶️🌶️ Slow burn so really just one or two scenes right at the end, I didn’t feel as connected as I did in out on a limb but it was cute.

This was such a touching and heartfelt story. The plot pulled me in right away, and I absolutely loved the characters—their depth, their growth, and the way their journeys unfolded. The disability representation was beautifully handled and added so much meaning and authenticity to the story. The backstory was layered and emotional and I can’t count how many times I teared up while reading. It truly squeezed my heart and didn’t let go. 🌶️ 2/5 – A sweet, emotional slow burn that earned every bit of its tension. The pacing felt intentional, and the payoff was worth the wait. 📚 Reading Between the Vines: 📚 Click Here to Join a Fun Discord Book Club
