Rina Kent really said, what if Mulan had joined the Bratva instead of the Imperial Army? And honestly? I was SAT. I had such a good time with Blood of My Monster. The military setting, the hidden identity, the danger, the constant feeling that everything could implode at any second… it was giving Disney’s Mulan if Disney had decided to embrace crime, trauma, and unresolved sexual tension. And speaking of tension… THE TENSION. THE TENSION WAS TENSIONING. Every interaction between Sasha and Kirill felt loaded. Every look, every conversation, every moment they occupied the same space had me internally screaming. Rina Kent absolutely knows how to make two characters breathe in the same direction and somehow turn it into an event. I can see why so many readers love Kirill because I, too, have become another statistic. I also really enjoyed the military aspect of the story, although I can understand why some readers wanted more mafia elements earlier on. Personally, I thought the slower build-up worked because it gave the relationship room to develop and made all that delicious tension even better. Overall, this was a really enjoyable read for me. It was not quite a five-star obsession, but it was a very solid four stars and an excellent reminder that apparently I am incapable of resisting hidden identities, morally grey men, and books that accidentally make me want to rewatch Mulan.
