Wonderful book, I enjoyed the cosy witchy aspects but also the spice was really good!

In all honesty, I'm not actually sure this book deserves the two stars I'm giving it. I picked this up on a whim thinking it was going to be a cute and quick Halloween-y read, and while I did finish it in less than a day, the only cute thing about this book was its premise. While I really enjoyed the setting (I would love to live in a town like Pleasant Grove), most everything else about this book fell very flat to me. This could all boil down to the fact that it was quite short and literally did not have the length to flesh out what needed to be fleshed out. Spoiler-y rant ahead. Major spoilers will be marked. Willow was okay, but I would run the other way if Damien ever walked up to me in a bar. He kept a huge secret from Willow for 75-80% of the book because he didn't want to deal with the consequences of the secret; he was jealous and possessive from an incredibly early point in the book, even before they'd really established a relationship; and once they were in a relationship, it was like he could do no wrong in Willow's eyes. He just wasn't a good romantic hero to me. I don't think I'm overly picky when it comes to romance, but so much about this one gave me the ick. Willow felt an intense connection to Damien while he was in his cat form, even going so far as to wonder if his demon form was hot (??). It was clear from Damien's internal monologue pretty early that he knew he and Willow were fated mates, so I didn't love how Willow's revelation of this wasn't until the end. It was needlessly drawn-out. This book also didn't have a great interpretation of the fated mates trope. It was a straight copy/paste of how it goes in Sarah J. Maas books (so far as to have the obsession of calling each other "my mate"). The biggest issue with that is that in SJM books, the reveal feels earned; this one does not. I cringed over they constantly referred to each other as "my little witch" and "my demon," as it felt very stilted and unrealistic. The spicy scenes also weren't for me, but that may be because I wasn't a fan of the romance, so I was uninterested in the spice. As for the plot... the premise presented in the write-up was resolved quite early, and without any real obstacles. From there, it was very generic cozy romance (which I didn't mind!) up until Damien's secret is revealed in the third act. This secret sees Damien and Willow head to the demon realm, and nothing makes sense from there. Willow's sister Luna, who we have only seen as content in her life up to this point suddenly is super cool about being the fated mate of the demon prince, and leaving her beloved bakery behind to be his bride? And Willow just... accepts that without protest? Then returns to the human world without a worry? And isn't even mad at Damien for not telling her that he knew? As an older sister, I just cannot wrap my head around this. The epilogue also got on my nerves; I'm really tired of seeing women in romance books who are unsure what they want from life finding their husband, getting married, having babies, and feeling like that was their purpose all along. While I realize that this is the path that some women take, and there is nothing wrong with that, it gets incredibly tiring when every romance book ends that way. All in all, I am disappointed that this book was really not for me. It was just too short to deliver on a really promising premise.
