VE Schwab

4.41

From V. E. Schwab, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue: a new genre-defying novel about immortality and hunger.

This is a story about hunger.

1532. Santo Domingo de la Calzada.

A young girl grows up wild and wily—her beauty is only outmatched by her dreams of escape. But María knows she can only ever be a prize, or a pawn, in the games played by men. When an alluring stranger offers an alternate path, María makes a desperate choice. She vows to have no regrets.

This is a story about love.

1827. London.

A young woman lives an idyllic but cloistered life on her family’s estate, until a moment of forbidden intimacy sees her shipped off to London. Charlotte’s tender heart and seemingly impossible wishes are swept away by an invitation from a beautiful widow—but the price of freedom is higher than she could have imagined.

This is a story about rage.

2019. Boston.

College was supposed to be her chance to be someone new. That’s why Alice moved halfway across the world, leaving her old life behind. But after an out-of-character one-night stand leaves her questioning her past, her present, and her future, Alice throws herself into the hunt for answers . . . and revenge.

This is a story about life—

how it ends, and how it starts.

“Bury my bones in the midnight soil, plant them shallow and water them deep, and in my place will grow a feral rose, soft red petals hiding sharp white teeth.” ~ This book is everything I wanted and more. Exceeded all of my expectations just like her books always do. VE Schwabs writing style is just so beautiful I can’t help but fall more in love with every line. These toxic lesbian vampires were incredible. I am always such a sucker for vampire stories and while this was not like any I’ve read before I loved it just as much, if not more. Bury our bones in the midnight soil followed the lives and deaths of three young girls who were all so different and they all made you feel so much. One of my favourite things about all the VE Schwab I’ve read so far is how she writes her villains, they are so real and everything about them has its reasons. She truly makes you feel for every character. The ending of this book as with all of her books did leave me wanting more. The audiobook was fantastic and I highly recommend it. It did give me Addie Larue vibes with the centuries and different places that this story took place and the underlying theme of profound loneliness. I will definitely find myself going back to this one like I do with Addie. 🌶️1/5 A couple vague scenes but nothing overly graphic. It felt like just the right amount for the story being told.

*“It’s the way you cannot hide your feelings. If they do not spill out of your mouth, they shimmer on your skin. They fill the air around you, so loud they almost shout.”* What I loved: ✿ the moody atmosphere ✿ time periods felt properly paced ✿ unique perspectives on what it is to be a vampire ✿ female rage immortalized over 5 centuries Oof deciding what to rate this was difficult and i’m still not sure I’m satisfied. My biggest peeves with this book was Alice’s character as she felt like an afterthought to the overall story. Her flashbacks and wordy syntax didn’t endear her to me, if anything it overshadowed her character’s purpose. The other characters, while toxic and monstrous in their own ways, had goals I could understand and rationalize. Other than that, the vibes and atmosphere were immaculate. Trigger warnings: Blood, Death, Toxic relationship, Sexual content, Emotional abuse, Homophobia, Suicide, War, Death of parent [✿ Connect with me on instagram ✿](https://www.instagram.com/laurynnlately?igsh=aTh6eTZ6dGwxMXpy&utm_source=qr)

This is a book to press in amber and it will not wither in time like the others—preserved, haunting, and wonderful. A story of hunger and desire, of what changes and what stubbornly stays the same as the years stretch on. It’s a declaration on love and the ache that shadows it when you live forever. I truly enjoyed this one, and the subtitle “Toxic Lesbian Vamps” delivers exactly what it promises. Between the three main characters, it’s hard to say what’s more dangerous: immortality or an obsessed ex. I also loved the Addie easter egg, such a subtle and clever way of tying those worlds together. Jess. Freckles like stars across her cheeks. “Is it life,” he counters, “if there is never death to balance it? Or is its brevity what makes it beautiful?” 🌶️ Spice Level: 3/5 – The spice had a dreamlike quality, drifting through the story like mist. VE’s poetic prose makes even the most intimate moments feel suspended in time—aching, blurred, and unforgettable. "...You learn how heavy some feelings weigh, how much they’ll drag you down. Anger and resentment are the worst. They’re like rocks in your pockets. Too many, and you’ll drown.” 📚 Reading Between the Vines: 📚 Click Here to Join a Fun Discord Book Club

This book absolutely spoke to my soul. I love how we follow these different girls from different times and how the threads weave together to form the most beautiful story! The end was somewhat heartbreaking but I feel like it was necessary, I loved this story so much.

4.5 stars I thoroughly enjoyed this book but found my interest waning around 50% because I just did not care for Alice.  I know she is the means to an end to explain Sabine and Charlotte's story as well as another way to encapsulate loneliness, grief and humanity. I just didn't care for her or the flashbacks. However, the ending raised my opinion of her and altogether, raised the my rating of the book.  Initially it was going to be 4.25 but having finished the book moments ago, I have to agree the ending was brilliant. Sabine, I warmed to immediately and rooted for her but ultimately ended up loving to hate her. Charlotte and Sabine were great extremes of humanity and lack of. As my first V.E Schwab book, I find myself wanting to explore their other works because I want more of what they bring to a book.

2.75 ⭐ *Downgraded from 3.5 just bc I still think about this in a negative light I've seen this described as toxic lesbian vampires, and it's absolutely correct. This has the signature Schwab atmosphere: moody, poetic, and slightly unsettling with a creeping tension. The shifting timelines and different povs added a depth to the story and I really enjoyed the unique spin on vampire lore. The world-building was rich and helped to set the vibe perfectly imo and really hooked me for the first half. I was fully invested in Alice from the start and watching her develop into the 'new Alice' was one of the highlights for me. Maria, on the other hand... I felt sorry for her initially, but once she became Sabine, I struggled to like anything about her. The way she treated everyone made it hard to root for her and in the end I wasn't sure how I was supposed to feel. The ending is where it really fell apart for me. The resolution felt a bit rushed and the emotional payoff just didn't land. This still offers a dark and moody experience, especially if you like messy!
