Alchemised
In this riveting dark fantasy debut, a woman with missing memories fights to survive a war-torn world of necromancy and alchemy—and the man tasked with unearthing the deepest secrets of her past.
“What is it you think you’re protecting in that brain of yours? The war is over. Holdfast is dead. The Eternal Flame extinguished. There’s no one left for you to save.”
Once a promising alchemist, Helena Marino is now a prisoner—of war and of her own mind. Her Resistance friends and allies have been brutally murdered, her abilities suppressed, and the world she knew destroyed.
In the aftermath of a long war, Paladia’s new ruling class of corrupt guild families and depraved necromancers, whose vile undead creatures helped bring about their victory, holds Helena captive.
According to Resistance records, she was a healer of little importance within their ranks. But Helena has inexplicable memory loss of the months leading up to her capture, making her enemies wonder: Is she truly as insignificant as she appears, or are her lost memories hiding some vital piece of the Resistance’s final gambit?
To uncover the memories buried deep within her mind, Helena is sent to the High Reeve, one of the most powerful and ruthless necromancers in this new world. Trapped on his crumbling estate, Helena’s fight—to protect her lost history and to preserve the last remaining shreds of her former self—is just beginning. For her prison and captor have secrets of their own . . . secrets Helena must unearth, whatever the cost.

Alchemised was one of those books that left me feeling completely emotionally wrung out. It felt like living through your first heartbreak—devastating, fresh, and cut open. I was emotional throughout nearly the entire book, and by the time I reached the end, I was both grateful that I had read it and relieved that I could finally put it down. The story follows Helena Marino, a former alchemist whose memories have been erased after a devastating war. Forced to live under the control of the ruling regime, she becomes entangled with Kaine Ferron, a powerful and mysterious necromancer. As fragments of Helena's past begin to surface, she is forced to confront what was taken from her, what she survived, and the truth behind the world she's been forced to live in. The emotional weight of this story is what made it five stars for me. It was heavy in a way that stayed with me, and there were times I needed to step away for a bit before coming back to it. Not because I wasn't enjoying it, but because of how deeply it affected me. Helena and Kaine felt incredibly real to me. I became so attached to both of them, not only because of everything they individually endured, but because of the way their suffering drew them toward one another. Their relationship is complicated, heartbreaking, tender, and devastating all at once. I desperately wanted them to have their happily ever after while simultaneously just hoping they would survive. I loved the lore and magic in this world, although the world-building was definitely a lot to take in at first. It felt more like being thrown into the deep end than gradually introduced to the world, but once I became comfortable with it, I was completely invested. Having already read Manacled, I went into Alchemised knowing the story, which was both a comfort and a hindrance. The familiarity made it easier for me to keep going, but it also meant some moments didn't hit quite as hard as they did the first time around. Even knowing what was coming, though, this book still managed to hurt. The ending gave me closure, but I still couldn't shake the sadness for these characters and everything they had endured. If you're a Dramione fan, I'd definitely recommend reading Manacled first and giving yourself some time before picking up Alchemised. If Dramione isn't your thing, I honestly wouldn't go out of your way to read it simply because it's an adaptation of that story.
