Dating After the End of the World

Jeneva Rose

4.29

There’s nothing like the undead to bring the living together in an action-packed and apocalyptically romantic genre-shattering novel by a #1 New York Times bestselling author.

Casey Pearson grew up with a doomsday-prepping father. At eighteen, tired of living an unconventional life, she left home, vowing never to return.

More than a decade later, a mysterious viral outbreak changes everything, including the people it infects, turning them into zombielike creatures. It’s the end of the world, and no one saw it coming—well, except for Casey’s father. With no place left to run and danger lurking around every corner, Casey is forced to return home.

Upon arrival, she’s surprised to find that her dad has hunkered down with a group of survivors, including her archnemesis, Blake Morrison, the high school bully who made Casey’s teenage years a living hell.

While struggling to live on the compound, face outside threats, and survive alongside her handsome enemy, Casey will learn that although the world has ended, hers is just beginning.

I need to give myself 3 business days to compose myself before reviewing so I’m not a total petty hater. ~ I did in fact hate this in the end. this had so much promise and I was really enjoying it the first 100 or so pages. But as the story went on it started to get cringy and plot fell apart. Things started getting revealed that didn’t make any sense with what we previously knew. I also hated the mmc and that is mostly a taste thing but at the same time there was no connection and build up between the love interests. Blake didn’t even try to apologize for everything he put Casey through until he thought he was going to die and even then her BARELY did. Also they just all of a sudden were in love. And then they killed off the best character. It’s a zombie apocalypse fine. Idk this just really disappointed me in the last 60%. The sex scene was also so utterly cringy I almost DNF for that alone

The first 30-40% of this book was solid and the pacing was great, characters were fine, but then it just kinda got worse... Early on I was leaning more towards 4-5 stars, and even thinking to myself "This is the best JR book I've read yet..." But after finishing I am rating this 2.5 and rounding up to 3. The MMC was awful, I could not get over how much of an asshole he was, and to top it off his bullying nature goes back for years of the FMCs life and just keeps going, I could not see how she was able to get over it so casually, even after his apology and reasoning finally came it just wasnt good enough imo and should have come so much sooner. This is structured like enemies to lovers but its a straight up bully romance and I dont think thats my thing. On top of that the FMC was a doctor and almost 30, and she started out mature, independent and strong, but devolved into this pouty childish thing that I found really annoying at some points. With some minor character tweaks this would have been a banger, the zombie descriptions were beautifully done and the writing overall was really great, I also found myself laughing out loud at some moments, and I was a huge fan of a character returning at the end with all that went into that, inner turmoil and external chaos it was a really well blended twist I was too distracted by other things to see coming. As for the end... I feel like it was just thrown in for the sake of shock and chaos, it wasnt really needed tbh but ok its fine, everything fine but I have questions how easy something very strategically hidden has been able to find... 🌶️ 2/5 I really wasnt a fan of this relationship so to me the chemistry seemed fake or forced and a little cringy. Im not really sure if they are showering regularly either... I may have missed that.

This would have been so much better without the romance and character deaths that add literally nothing to the story.
