Hemlock & Silver

T. Kingfisher

4.59

From New York Times bestselling and Hugo Award-winning author T. Kingfisher comes Hemlock & Silver, a dark reimagining of “Snow White” steeped in poison, intrigue, and treason of the most magical kind

Healer Anja regularly drinks poison.

Not to die, but to save— seeking cures for those everyone else has given up on.

But a summons from the King interrupts her quiet, herb-obsessed life. His daughter, Snow, is dying, and he hopes Anja’s unorthodox methods can save her.

Aided by a taciturn guard, a narcissistic cat, and a passion for the scientific method, Anja rushes to treat Snow, but nothing seems to work. That is, until she finds a secret world, hidden inside a magic mirror. This dark realm may hold the key to what is making Snow sick.

Or it might be the thing that kills them all.

This was my first ever T. Kingfisher and I really enjoyed this story, I do think it felt a lot more Alice in wonderland then Snow White or maybe a mash up of the two but I had so much fun reading it. It was creepy, and humorous and kept me interested throughout. I wasn’t expecting the romance and I don’t think the story would suffer without it but I did think it was cute. I loved the fmc and the humour she brought to the story really sold it for me. I am excited to check out more of this authors work in the future.

I enjoyed the writing in this. The fmc was an interesting character with her study of poisons and had a lot of internal dialog going on, but it was fun to read. There were some funny moments I found myself laughing, and some moments where it felt a little slow, but still kept me entertained enough to keep going.

A retelling of Snow White. I loved everything about this, the story, the characters, the relationships, the mystery, the world building, just all of it. Just read the book. it's so good.
