Thank you to V. Casa for the ARC, and shame on you for leaving me with a cliff hanger! But also bravo, this was hard to put down once it got going. Going into this one, I’ll admit it didn’t hook me quite as quickly as the first book, but the longer I stayed with it, the more it pulled me in. The pacing stays steady throughout like the first, never lingering too long in any specific era, telling the story as if we are following along with Lily's diary, and picking up more buried details about her coming full circle along the way. There’s a constant thread of grief from decisions she's made, loss, love, and heartbreak as Lily continues drifting forward, and it creates this lingering feeling of isolation that carries through majority of the story. It’s less about connecting with the people around her and more about experiencing everything through her, which makes her perspective feel even more central. It was harder for me to connect with some of the side characters in this one, but that almost added to the tone of the book, everything feels temporary, uncertain, and just out of reach. And as Lily continues moving forward, there’s this quiet question underneath it all about what remains when everything familiar is gone. The ending especially took me by surprise. It goes in a direction I wasn’t expecting, also playing on some of my own fears for humanity and earth as we know it... but it left me really curious to see how everything comes together in the final book. There’s still a bigger picture forming here, and I’m definitely invested in seeing where it leads, and to get some questions answered. Overall, this was a slower build for me compared to book one, but one that paid off emotionally. I’m really looking forward to seeing how Lily’s story ends and to also excited have another character to invest in along the way.
