Penn Cole

4.58

When old secrets catch fire, everything will burn.

In a mortal world colonized by the gods and ruled over by their cruel offspring, the Descended, Diem Bellator yearns to escape the insular life of her poor village.

Her mother's sudden disappearance—and the discovery of a dangerous secret about her past—offer Diem an unexpected opportunity to enter the dark world of Descended royalty and unlock the web of mysteries her mother left behind.

With the dying king's handsome, mysterious heir watching her every move and a ruthless mortal alliance recruiting her to join the growing civil war, Diem will have to navigate the unwritten rules of love, power, and politics in order to save her family—and all of mortal kind.

Spark of the Everflame is the first book in The Kindred's Curse Saga, a four-book epic fantasy romance series that follows our feisty, bad*ss heroine Diem Bellator in her fight against injustice and oppression, her struggle to survive in a royal palace full of betrayal and intrigue, and her journey of self-discovery and finding true love. This slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers series is perfect for fans of unique magic systems, dragons and other mythical creatures, angst and romantic tension, and hilarious banter.

I haven't been swept away so swiftly by a book since ACOTAR. I was HOOKED from the very beginning, highlighting like crazy and theorizing before I was even 100 pages in. Get ready to fall in love with another man written by a woman. I think I might just be in love with Penn Cole at this point. i mean, the dedication? For anyone who has ever been told their spark shouldn’t burn so bright and for all the people who loved them precisely because it did. im sobbing I NEED THE NEXT BOOK IMMEDIATELY Thank you Netgalley & Atria Books for a copy of this eArc!!

I’ve been in a bit of a slump maybe because of my last few reads, but this book has captured my heart. I loved the world building, steady buildup of the plot, the intrigue and mystery, and the slow burn romance. I’ve seen a lot of reviewers talk about how much they hate Diem and how immature she is. I don’t think the author tried to make you believe she was anything other than naive, sheltered, and trying to figure out her place in this world while also trying to manage this power that has been held at bay. I love that we get to see her at this moment in her journey because I hope that means character development and badassery in our future. 🤩 SO looking forward to reading the next book!

This book was a GREAT start to (hopefully) a really good series. I really like the FMC in this one, shes a badass, has all the sass and doesnt give a fuck who you are, she stands her ground. Some of the twists I kinda picked up on and guessed correctly, but that did not take away from the story at all. There was good banter and saucy scenes, as well as tension. It was constantly giving me a little, making me want more, but not ruining whats to come. 🌶️ 2/5 I love how this “appears” YA but it is very much adult. From the language to the first spice scene early on - it is very much mature content. I do NOT like the main love interest in this - dude gives me the fucking ick, BUT i have a feeling he’s going to be like Tamlin and yeeted very soon… so the “real” MMC can step in, because that one… is ENDGAME.
