Assistant to the Villain #4

Adversary to the Villain

Hannah Nicole Maehrer

New Release
4.40

HR Update: The position of “adversary to the villain” has been filled. Evie Sage does not recall applying.

Evie has always tried to be helpful, loyal, and only mildly involved in treason. But with a dangerous prophecy threatening the very magic of Rennedawn—not to mention the race to claim its necessary artifacts before King Benedict does—things are starting to feel…less like a career path and more like a serious problem.

The prophecy won’t stop pointing in Evie’s direction. The Villain’s magic keeps choosing her. And honestly, if you’re going to be accused of evil anyway, you might as well commit.

Unfortunately, the more Evie leans into her alleged villain era, the more her boss starts acting like the hero of a completely different story. Trystan is getting closer—closer than is wise, advisable, or even remotely professional—and looking at her like she’s already chosen a side. His.

Which is deeply inconvenient, because if Evie can’t save the kingdom’s magic, she might just become its greatest threat.

The hilarious fantasy romance series doesn't end at Adversary to the Villain! The thrilling conclusion to the series is coming soon!

The Assistant and the Villain series is best enjoyed in order.

I LOVED this book. The humour was still wonderful, the characters remained complete disasters in the most lovable way, and the plot felt bigger and more dangerous than ever. Between the prophecy, the missing artefacts, the kingdom’s magic, and King Benedict continuing to be the human equivalent of an infected papercut, there was constantly something happening. Evie and Trystan also continued their proud tradition of being deeply in love while making everything approximately seventeen times more complicated than necessary. The tension, loyalty, guilt, and emotional suffering between them had me repeatedly screaming, “WHEN WILL IT BE ENOUGH?” Then Evie stabbed Trystan, because this relationship clearly needed another obstacle. Perfect. Wonderful. Very healthy. The supporting characters were once again fantastic, but Kingsley remains the true literary icon of our generation. His one-word chapters cracked me up. That little amphibian/human deserves a raise. I also loved how many reveals were woven into the story. Every time I thought I understood the prophecy or someone’s role in it, the book produced another piece of information and politely threw it at my forehead. The core-healer reveal? The test? BECKY FAILING SAID TEST? That painfully uncomfortable dinner party? I was INVESTED. And then came the ending. The curse? The prophecy? KING BENEDICT? This was funny, romantic and chaotic with characters I have become far too attached to. The stakes were higher, the reveals were excellent, and that ending has sentenced me to another deeply unreasonable waiting period. Five stars. I loved everything, I trust nobody, and I require the next book immediately.

ALL THE STARS! LITERALLY EVERY STAR Ugh I forgot how much I loved and missed these characters until I started reading this book. book 5 when 😂🫠 I had an absolute blast reading this book, the characters and the setting are so hilarious and so much fun. I was giggling on almost every single page. I absolutely loved how down bad and utterly obsessed that Tristen was for Evie in this book! Finally the man is pinning out loud and not just on the inside. This has definitely been my favourite of the series and Tristen is a major part of that. I thought we would have gotten more of Alexander’s motivations in this book but we are still left in the dark. That added onto the ending I need the next book now!! As always the audio was incredible and I love this cast of characters so much, even more POVs in this book and Kingsleys chapters at the beginning of this book were amazing.
