A New York Times and USA Today Bestseller

Now an Apple Original series from Academy Award nominees Paul Weitz and Chris Weitz and starring Emmy Award winner Alexander Skarsgård.

A murderous android discovers itself in All Systems Red, a tense science fiction adventure by Martha Wells that interrogates the roots of consciousness through Artificial Intelligence.

“As a heartless killing machine, I was a complete failure.”

In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety.

But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern.

On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid—a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is.

But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth.

This was such a fun and cute story in a way. It is a quick and short book but it feels very high stakes within the sci-fi genre. The setting and set-up of the book is really well done and super interesting. The robot MC was very socially awkward and shy which added so much depth to the story too. The last two pages or so were very unexpected for me and I thought we would have a happy ending for sure, but nope... Considering this is the first part of the Murderbot diaries, I am very curious to see how it will continue!

4.5 ⭐️ This was even better than anticipated! I am truly in my sci-fi era right now. This definitely has me so excited to read this series. A murderbot with social anxiety 😭 sign me up immediately. I literally love him so much. This was such a fun short read but it truly has me loving the characters and so invested in such a short amount of time.

There were parts of this that were a little slow, but it is a diary of sorts, an awkward internal monologue of the robot, its organically inorganic growth and POV and conversations it experiences—which was a unique way to get into this story. Really easy read, and super short, I could do some things around the house and listen along. I am super excited for the show, it will be fun to binge. This was a 3.5 I’m rounding up to 4. If you are into scifi this is a good place to start with something simple. I will be reading more of this series later.

I can understand why people enjoy the Murderbot diaries, but I don’t think this series is fully for me. During the first third of the book, I did not like our protagonist at all. Its general apathy towards its job and the crew were frustrating to me, and its quirky attributes didn’t really do it for me. I think the story itself was interesting, but overall, I’m not sure I wish to continue this series.
