One of People’s Best Books to Read in February

A dangerous alliance between a Vampyre bride and an Alpha Werewolf becomes a love deep enough to sink your teeth into in this new paranormal romance from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Love, Theoretically and The Love Hypothesis.

Misery Lark, the only daughter of the most powerful Vampyre councilman of the Southwest, is an outcast—again. Her days of living in anonymity among the Humans are over: she has been called upon to uphold a historic peacekeeping alliance between the Vampyres and their mortal enemies, the Weres, and she sees little choice but to surrender herself in the exchange—again...

Weres are ruthless and unpredictable, and their Alpha, Lowe Moreland, is no exception. He rules his pack with absolute authority, but not without justice. And, unlike the Vampyre Council, not without feeling. It’s clear from the way he tracks Misery’s every movement that he doesn’t trust her. If only he knew how right he was….

Because Misery has her own reasons to agree to this marriage of convenience, reasons that have nothing to do with politics or alliances, and everything to do with the only thing she's ever cared about. And she is willing to do whatever it takes to get back what’s hers, even if it means a life alone in Were territory…alone with the wolf.

Ali Hazelwood has redeemed herself for me. I said it. This is my favorite book by her that I've read so far. I love Misery and Lowe. They're genuinely so good together. I loved Ana! I haven't read that many books with children as a part of them, and she was just amazing. SERENA AND KOEN??? I NEED A BOOK FOR THEM RIGHT NOW!! I loved the smut. It was absolutely fantastic and very, VERY hot. Sweating in my boots over here. I give this book 5/5 stars, and a spot on the Hall of Fame shelf.

Reread October 2025 I was only 3 months into reading Romantasy when I read this the first time round, so I was much easier pleased. I do still love it, just not quite as much as I did the first time. There were a few romance related elements that gave me the ick, things I definitely didn’t pick up on the first time. The characters are what make this book so great, Anna is absolutely my favourite, I love her and I love the way Misery really warms up to her, it feels really natural and well written. As much as I love Lowe, Vampire MMCs are my favourite, so I wish he was the vampire and Misery the Werewolf. Original read in March 2024 I’ve just changed this from a 4 to a 5 rating, because it’s been over a month since I read it and I still think about it all of that time. So clearly, it’s got to have been 5 to still be on my mind, I’d already do a reread. It was just such a simple, easy read that kept me engaged throughout, a cute little romance with a side of fantasy. I felt it was well written and I actually have zero reason to give less than 5*, I have no idea why I had it rated at 4, if I’m honest. I’ve never been one for a romance novel, romantasy yes, solo romance no. Yet here I am reading romance to try and get the same feels I got while reading this. I want every book I read to be as easy as this.

I really enjoyed this, the audio was really good as well. Misery was a great fmc and I loved getting bits and pieces of Lowes thoughts at the beginning of every chapter, dual POV is my favourite and I think everyone who writes single POV romance should add tiny bits like this to get some insight into the other main character. The one thing that brought this down for me was the whole dialogue scene during chapter right after. I get we need third act drama but we had other things going on and I hated this scene so much. All the things he used against her in the moment and then he just left her there. It also just felt so out of character for me, I’m sorry but Lowe would NEVER.

This was such a fun read! No I’m not overwhelmed with love for it but I enjoyed it a lot. The witty & funny banter, the writing was nicely done in my opinion, and the spice was HOT. The only thing I took issue with was the MMC pushing the FMC away in a very toxic manner. I get that he was afraid to involve her in an all-consuming mateship but it could have been communicated better and I would have loved the book more for that. I’m in my healing era, ok??

This was good, like many of AHs books, I had trouble putting it down once I got into it. This is an even slower burn than her others tho, and while I do enjoy those FUCK THIS PERSON moments I usually get when crazy shit starts happening and people do fucked up things, I did not like that the MMC was this person and SO mean to her after their first shag… Like it wasnt explained and didnt really fit the plot… It came off as really sleazy and Im deducting a star because of that, it changed my whole mood after reading that part. Not saying I still didnt enjoy it, but execution was lacking. 🌶️ 3/5 There were some really hot moments ngl, but honestly, the spice was not as good as her other books - which, is kinda sad because there was SO much potential to be even better than her other books, i mean c’mon KNOTTING… whats knot to love…

it was enjoyable, but nothing groundbreaking. the characters were interesting and the dynamics at play were entertaining; the romance was fun, but not especially noteworthy (except for the super gross thing that happens during some steamy scenes, iykyk). there was some set-up for a potential spin-off with side characters, which I'd be willing to read.

3.75 ⭐ I really liked it until the dialogue in Ch 30. That knocked it down a bit.
