The Poison Daughter

Sheila Masterson

4.77

Every person Harlow Carrenwell kisses dies immediately, and that’s the way she likes it. The poison-lipped youngest daughter of Lunameade’s magical founding family has used her power to annihilate their opposition.

Her first husband is in the ground. Her new betrothed is next.

But the merry widow has a secret. When she’s not acting as an assassin at her parents' whims, she moonlights as a vigilante for abused women in their walled-off city.

Meet a man. Lure him in. Kill him with a kiss. Until one night Harlow kisses a mark and he doesn’t die.

Worse, her invincible partner in passion is her new betrothed, Henry Havenwood, and now he knows about her double life. Instead of selling her out and bringing the rival families to blows, he does something much more sinister—whisks her away to wed in his wild mountain fort.

Harlow doesn’t trust Henry, but the only way to protect her family and the city of Lunameade is to figure out what his family is planning.

Cursed with a husband she can’t kill and trapped in a fort miles of vampire-infested woods from home, Harlow’s survival requires her to do the impossible: Make the man who knows she’s a killer fall in love with her anyway.

This has taken me wayyy too long to read, but alas, here we are. I truly did love this book. It was very slow for me to get through since it has no audio yet, but I finally got into it and finished it in the last few days. I sped through the last 20% or so, and really enjoyed it. I love Henry & Harlow so much. I think they both truly compliment each other so well. I genuinely hate that Aidia was dead the whole time. Like, here I was, thinking she'd die at the festival or it was more recent, not a whole ass six months beforehand 🥲. There were some amazing quotes about grief in here that I loved, too. Overall, I really loved this book, and it's definitely a 5/5 for me. I'll probably re-read it when the audio comes out later this year!

I started this book at the beginning of the year and was hooked on the story and the characters from the very first page. I decided to put this book on pause to wait for the audiobook because I really wanted to immersive read this and I’m so glad that I did. The audio made this experience even better. I loved Harlow so much! She was such an amazing and strong fmc, my heart broke for everything she had to go through. She can do no wrong in my eyes, I truly don’t want to hear a single bad word about her. I did not see that twist coming at all! I was so destroyed. This was such an amazing standalone. I feel like nothing is a standalone anymore and this was such an amazing one and it shows that you can still do a hell of a lot with just one book!
