I actually loved this, don't let the rating fool you. There were just a few things that ground my gears just a little too much for this to be a four star. I think the most enjoyable part though was the flirty banter between Jesper and Wylan, loved that.

3 is not a bad review, I would even maybe say this was 3.5 - also not bad. If I had not seen the show I may have struggled to get through this. It got a lot better the further in I got, honestly. The characters were really well written and had a lot of flaws that made them both likable and dislikable. I think my main gripe is the "age" of the characters. This is supposed to be YA - ok fine, but these "teens" are going through some really adult things. And it's a constant reminder how young they are, because it's repeated a LOT. I did really love the characters, and will probably read book 2 when I have some time. I was also slightly confused with the backslide into the past and back to the present - some of this was in the show, but the show was based on the first set of books? I heard this was done to help aid spin-offs from the show (that never happened bc netflix is a douche who cancel everything good) - but I guess we'll never know now. 🌶️ 0/5 As an avid romance reader, I kept getting "hints" that some of these characters were into each other, or had past things, and I was rooting for that - but on the other side, these are teens pretending to be adults, so it makes it weird. Luckily, nothing happened - other than the references of dark weird shit you don't want to hear about... which, ok fine, not all stories are happy, thats fine. I wished they were aged up like they were in the show, it would have made this a much better read.

I’m sitting in bed at 3:25 in the morning having just finished this masterpiece of a book. I did not give one single care to the rest of my household as I THREW this book to the floor. My Heart Hurts! I am beyond words and am somehow finding them enough to ramble about how good this book is. How breathtakingly wonderfully beautiful it is. Also can I please please please shed light in the fact that this is the first time in a long time that I was expecting one of the characters to die and was pleasantly surprised that none did. Though I suppose there is the illusion of Kaz’s personality deaths that he seems to periodically go through. Speaking of… Give that boy a damn break. I means yes. I love the completely unhinged. He tore out a man’s eyeball for Inej. I screamed. I was screaming. The screaming is still going on silently in my head but it’s there because hello morally grey dark romance girlies. I have your next slice of cake over here. His name is Kaz Brekker and he needs your attention. The world building, the action, the never ending guessing game of what the heck is going to happen next. It’s all you have ever wanted but didn’t know you needed. Goodnight 😴

I’m repeating an earlier sentiment here. The writing. The worldbuilding. The characters. The plot. Phenomenal.
