Now Alina will enter a lavish world of royalty and intrigue as she trains with the Grisha, her country’s magical military elite—and falls under the spell of their notorious leader, the Darkling. He believes Alina can summon a force capable of destroying the Shadow Fold and reuniting their war-ravaged country, but only if she can master her untamed gift.

As the threat to the kingdom mounts and Alina unlocks the secrets of her past, she will make a dangerous discovery that could threaten all she loves and the very future of a nation.

Welcome to Ravka . . . a world of science and superstition where nothing is what it seems.

Okay, so there's quite a few things for me to talk about in this review. I read this for the first time last year, quite awhile before I'd gotten GoodReads, so I wanted to read it again so that I could actually keep track of when I read it. I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Alina even more than I did when I first read it. Her development through the entire story was beautiful. You see her go from this shy, quiet mapmaker who doesn't ever really talk to anyone, to this vibrant, outstanding Grisha who really isn't scared of anything. Let's talk Mal.. When I first read the book, I thought he was kind of.. annoying, toxic, manipulative, etc. Rereading, he actually isn't as bad as I remembered him being. Now.. Darklina. I still love Darklina. Now, listen, I don't condone what he did in the slightest, but I still love the way he originally treated her. It reminds me of a situation I was in once, so it's kind of.. nostalgic in a way. I think the plot in the book was yet again, amazing and well-developed. I hate the Apparat so much. Like, he genuinely creeps me out. But, at the end of the book when Mal and Alina are hugging while the kefta is burning, that's honestly really adorable. I wasn't the biggest fan of Malina originally, but it's kind of grown on me.. ish. Anyway, I give this book 4.5/5 stars, and as much as I loved it, this is probably my last time reading it.
