The Hating Game

Sally Thorne

4.46

Now a movie starring Lucy Hale and Austin Stowell, USA Today bestselling author Sally Thorne’s hilarious and sexy enemies to lovers workplace comedy all about that thin, fine line between hate and love.

Nemesis (n.) 1) An opponent or rival whom a person cannot best or overcome.

2) A person’s undoing

3) Joshua Templeman

Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman hate each other. Not dislike. Not begrudgingly tolerate. Hate. And they have no problem displaying their feelings through a series of ritualistic passive aggressive maneuvers and witty banter as they sit across from each other, executive assistants to co-CEOs of a publishing company. Lucy can’t understand Joshua’s joyless, uptight, meticulous approach to his job. Joshua is clearly baffled by Lucy’s overly bright clothes, quirkiness, and Pollyanna attitude, a classic grumpy sunshine dynamic.

Now up for the same promotion, their battle of wills has come to a head and Lucy refuses to back down when their latest game could cost her her dream job…But the tension between Lucy and Joshua has also reached its boiling point, and in this slow burn romance, Lucy is discovering that maybe she doesn’t hate Joshua. And maybe, he doesn’t hate her either. Or maybe this is just another game.

I love that the MFC is an avid reader. “My conditioner is probably more per ounce than cocain” hahaha! This was cute, I loved the banter and mutual pining - while trying to hate each other. It was funny, which i love in a book, and the MCs had good chemistry, even when they were being mean to each other. Theres a lot of sameness from the movie, but also the book has way more details and some of the main parts are executed differently so I enjoyed reading that. 🌶️ 2/5 The spice took awhile to get moving, but there was a lot of flirty/spicy banter. I guess you could call it four play leading up until when you finally do get to it. Then when you do it was sweet, funny, and awkward cute.

Lucy and Josh hate each other. After a merger between 2 publishing houses, they are now assistants to the co-CEOs and sit across from one another, playing all kinds of "hate" filled games. They don't understand the other, as they are pretty much opposites. When a promotion is mentioned that they are both pushing for, a new game starts. But who will win? I really enjoyed this story! Josh definitely played the long game for Lucy. I loved all the banter between them and how they gave as good as they got. I also enjoyed how actually funny this book was. Sometimes, a book will be funny, but this was laugh out loud while reading/listening.

This isn't typically what I pick out to read and if it wasn't for it being a Book Club pick I would have never read it, but I am very glad that I did! I actually read it so fast the first time that I knew I had to reread it in case I missed out on anything. The second time through was just as wonderful as the first time through. I updated my rating from 4 stars to 5 stars. It's funny and romantic in all the right ways! The main characters are so relatable that it's hard not to fall in love with the story.
