Cleopatra and Frankenstein
The smash-hit national bestseller and Goodreads Choice Award finalist from the New York Times bestselling author of Blue Sisters. An addictive, humorous, and poignant debut novel about the shock waves caused by one couple's impulsive marriage.
Twenty-four-year-old British painter Cleo has escaped from England to New York and is still finding her place in the sleepless city when, a few months before her student visa ends, she meets Frank. Twenty years older and a self-made success, Frank's life is full of all the excesses Cleo's lacks. He offers her the chance to be happy, the freedom to paint, and the opportunity to apply for a Green Card. But their impulsive marriage irreversibly changes both their lives, and the lives of those close to them, in ways they never could've predicted.
Each compulsively readable chapter explores the lives of Cleo, Frank, and an unforgettable cast of their closest friends and family as they grow up and grow older. Whether it's Cleo's best friend struggling to embrace his gender queerness in the wake of Cleo's marriage, or Frank's financially dependent sister arranging sugar daddy dates to support herself after being cut off, or Cleo and Frank themselves as they discover the trials of marriage and mental illness, each character is as absorbing, and painfully relatable, as the last.
As hilarious as it is heartbreaking, entertaining as it is deeply moving, Cleopatra and Frankenstein marks the entry of a brilliant and bold new talent.

This book.... I don't even know how to go about writing this review.... This was not a story I was expecting to happen and after the first 4 chapters I definetely thought "what is this for shitshow going on?". HOWEVER it got so so so good after that! It gave me the same vibes as "A little life" in a way, but also different in many other ways. You think the story will take a certain turn, and then it happens to take an entirely different turn. The story felt a little hard to get into, especially when they switched POV's a lot, but once I gotten into the story, I could not put it down anymore. (Like literally I read while waiting in line for the fittingrooms in the Zara store in Barcelona on vacation bc I had to put it down to go shopping IMAGINE THAT) The opinions online are very different about the many characters you will get to know, love or hate in this book. I just feel very empathetic to most of them. This book and this story shows the hard life that many life, especially in this day and time. I think the story tells a very raw story of life and I connected to it in so many ways. This was my first book of Coco Mellors and it was on my TBR for a long while. I am happy I read it, but check your trigger warnings before diving into it.
