Can't decide between 3.5 or 3.75, either way, it's rounded up for GR. Considering how many people I've seen DNF this book, I ended up enjoying it far more than I expected. Was it perfect? No. But it had plenty of interesting elements that kept me invested and wanting to know more. The characterisation is a little hit-and-miss. At times, it felt like most of the characters were trying a bit too hard to be snarky badasses. That said, there was enough history, chemistry, and development between them that I still found myself becoming invested in several of the characters. The world-building was solid, and the magic system felt refreshingly different from anything else I've read. I'm especially interested to see how it develops as the series continues. There were a few plot points that felt unnecessary or didn't really add much to the overall story, but for the most part I remained engaged throughout. The biggest disappointment for me was the final 10%. I came away feeling a little underwhelmed by the ending. It almost felt as though the author had run out of space and needed to wrap everything up quickly. After the pacing of the rest of the book, the conclusion felt abrupt and didn't land as strongly as I'd hoped. Overall, I can completely understand why this book won't work for everyone, especially for the reasons I've mentioned above. Despite its flaws, though, I genuinely had a good time reading it, and I'm excited to see where the series goes next.
